Letter to Nigeria's next President.

Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, this open letter is addressed to you for the simple reason that you are Nigeria's next president. This is not my humble opinion rather a thing that has been decided long before you, the son of a Fulani trader ever thought to pick the nomination form of that first of Nigeria's two gargantuan parties which in local parlance we aptly say are both 'big for nothing'.

It is not my place to challenge the decision to make you President of Nigeria, indeed if it is true that a people get the leadership they deserve, then in fairness I can say that we may have received someone slightly better than what we deserve. Emphasis on 'slightly'.

What I can challenge though, is the reasoning that Nigerian yea African leaders are above reprimand and should be accorded deity-like status in communication between them and the people they are meant to serve. This is hogwash. When a person, male or female puts themselves forward for public office, they must understand that at that moment they set aside whatever status, privilege or station of life they may have been bestowed with and become as low as the lowest of those whose lives they seek to govern.

The reason for this is simple. Life is greater than wealth, glory or fame. The presence of life, its essence, is far above any consideration or appurtenance that can be attached to it. This is why the dead no matter how glorious their lives may have been, can never be equated with the living however base their existence. By the presence of life, one already exceeds the dead immeasurably.

What this means is that one who would govern over the living must understand that the lives of the people  mean more and are inestimably valued far above the inanities of wealth and prestige. Thus Atiku Abubakar, regardless of your perceived accomplishments in wealth and station of life, by presenting yourself to be a leader of a free people, you have become no better than the underprivileged labourer who carries heavy burdens for others for a pittance in Mile Twelve market Lagos.

You are no better Atiku, than the sun-scorched street trader on Ring Road Benin-city who has to scrap a livelihood each day to feed her family while battling the harsh elements of nature and humanity being area boys and unscrupulous government agents. Nothing raises you Atiku above the Talakawa of Kano city, who pushes a wheel barrow to fund a meagre existence while everyday seeing dust thrown in his eye by the unperturbed tyres of his supposed servants as they flash by in vehicles he may never be deemed fit to wash.

You are at best at par Atiku, certainly no better than the hungry little girl who through no fault of hers has found herself a refugee in her own country residing in a poorly provisioned IDP camp somewhere in Borno state. If you can understand that these people mentioned are your real peers not the overfed elite that surround you; these struggling, defiant Nigerians are the ones who you must now compare yourself with, then there may yet be hope for your presidency.

Unfortunately, I do not believe you will be able to understand this. I am one of those that has long lost faith in your ilk in this country. Many of you even though you have tasted poverty at some stage of your lives now behave as if the very notion of poverty is so alien to you that it may well have been imported from another planet. Many like you Atiku have failed this nation in a manner that is unbecoming of the living. You Atiku and the bulk of the political class of Nigeria regardless of Party affiliation behave like the dead in the sense that you have no compassion and empathy for the living. I have lost faith in all of you.

So I propose something else that you may actually be able to do as President of Nigeria. It is a thing that if implemented with the powers at your disposal could set this country back on the clichèd path to greatness. Atiku Abubakar as your peer, I urge you to restore the rightful place of merit back to the top of all consideration in our National thinking. Re-establish a meritocracy in this country Atiku and you would have done this country the greatest service any of its leaders in living memory has yet done.

Make it possible Alhaji Abubakar that the child who scores highest in a common entrance exam regardless of their tribal extraction gets pride of place in admission to any Federal Government school of the child's choosing. Let same apply to all others down the line with the best being picked first, no excuses permissible.

Make it possible Atiku that the child who scores higher in the UTME does not have to be cast aside for someone with lower scores simply because he or she does not have 'someone' to push their case. Let the aspiring cadet to the Defence Academy who scores higher on the entrance tests in all departments not be cast aside for an inferior performer simply because that person comes from a supposedly superior circle of influence. When the Federal Government awards Scholarships and research grants, let merit alone be the determining factor devoid of political intrigue. This will engender true scholarliness and intellectual prosperity.

Nigeria is presently a country that diminishes its best and promotes the mediocre above them at every turn. The Federal civil service and all other facets of our National life are in shambles simply because our best are frustrated out of the system to the exaltation of their marked inferiors. Any country that does not aggressively pursue a system that nourishes its best and elevate same into positions of competence will inevitably retrogress into the doldrums of human existence. More explicitly, the country will become as Nigeria presently is.

Make merit our national standard, establish an enduring meritocracy. This is the challenge posed to you Atiku Abubakar by your true peers. I hope for Nigeria's sake, that you can rise to this.

Unwilling

I will die someday but today is not going to be that day
The toil feels eternal, the pain immortal for it dies not
Yesterday I was a nobody fathered by a fellow nobody
Hoping for today to bring a new prefix; the tag 'former'
Instead the unruly day brings along its own suffix: 'still'
I have learnt though; we toil not in vain only in pain.
For I am told my day awaits me and not vice versa
These things we hear, these scenes we see and live
They are the kettle of dreams but life's water boils not
A match or flaming tinder? Give me fire or give me death
So yes I will die someday but Heaven no, not today.

Trumping

This is the kind of article that makes powerful people very angry with the son of a nobody but do remember all that I am merely a humble messenger and all anger or intent to cause bodily harm should please be directed to The King whose protection I hereby invoke with all attendant privileges.

Now to the matter, it is at this time important for reasons not completely known to me but to which I nonetheless humbly defer, that I speak that which is laid upon my heart concerning the next American General elections. First, I should state that I am apolitical by nature. Politicians worldwide are generally a unique variant of human beings who lie with the boldness becoming the honest and are as hypocritical as they are adept at smiling relentlessly in public.

It is thus not in my character to involve myself in issues of partisan politics but as even the Sun makes exception for an eclipse of its brilliance by the dour moon, so I must excuse myself of my exciting routine as a penniless writer (a situation soon to be a matter past) and delve into the uninspiring rubbish heap of partisan politics seeing I hold the eternal hope of the scavenger: to retrieve precious ornaments unwittingly buried in a  mountain of waste.

My subject is the fascinating gentleman known to the world as DONALD TRUMP. Those who presently oppose him may do well for themselves though by naming him Hurricane Trump because regardless of whatever brilliant schemes they put together to try and stop him; they will be blown away by his coming and the truly unfortunate among them with collateral damage to the boot.

Why do I say this? My reason is simple; some things cannot be stopped for the reason that they are meant to happen. They have transcended that which is dormant or benign in the fabric of the universe to become live wires of metaphysical reverberation. In English, they carry too much charge to be diverted or extinguished, they must see their path through to its expected end.

It is the understanding of the inevitable that helps the wise cautiously avoid towing the path of disaster. Many who today lash out with all manner of vitriol against the candidacy of Donald Trump to be President of the United States claim they would stake their lives on his inability to win election into the White House. This is a foolhardy bet, such persons will gain nothing whatsoever being on a collision course with the inevitable... it always wins.

Donald Trump WILL BE the next president of the United States and there is nothing his opponents can do about this, the script has already moved on from this act. That we have not yet witnessed it does not mean that it is yet to occur.

What opponents of Mr. Trump should be channelling their energies towards at this time should be how to constructively engage him in the task of moving their great nation forward. Perhaps there is yet room in the script to allow for this but as to the matter of who becomes the next US President; don't be counted amongst those with eyes wide open who cannot see and ears spread wide who cannot hear.

Remember, I left an exciting life to share this post, to that I crave your indulgence to now return.

The secret of Greater-than

Greater-than was born into the squalor of a waterfront slum condemned by all as a wasteland never mind it was the only home that its impoverished occupants in their thousands could afford. This was the name his father gave to him at birth because he was overwhelmed that unto him a precious son had been born even though he owned nothing of any great value save his fishing boat and implements.

Greater-than his father named him, declaring on the tot’s behalf that he would overcome the adverse circumstances into which he had been born and rise above them to fulfil what his father believed was a great destiny.

So the child grew up in that waterfront slum, his first few years alive spent grappling with the harsh realities of one of the lowest abasements that could masquerade itself as a manifestation of life. It was his name that first drew our attention to him, a name that was as inspiring as it was provocative. His father clearly intended it to inspire him but we knew those of the darkness who the light no more was theirs to choose, would certainly be infuriated by him.

When Greater-than was six years old he rowed a canoe by himself into the deep past the point where his father had warned him never to venture for the shoreline of their waterfront home disappeared totally from view at this point. The young lad had been lured by a temptation to see beyond his father’s eyes but the intended end of this temptation was calamity. He was expected to drown submerged in a watery grave created by a simple roar of the waters.

Just before the prepared turbulence could rouse itself to claim the little boy’s life, Greater-than stood at the edge of his canoe’s head and declared to the ocean in clear voice bearing command of the first man: ALAYE KI ESU, LA ESU ALAYE KI! Those who had already started making a jest in anticipation of the child’s death were stunned beyond belief. The ocean swallowed its turbulence  and brought forth great calm as it witnessed the revelation of a master of the worlds.

Greater-than spoke again, this time introducing himself properly at which time his presence was equally acknowledged by the surrounding onlookers; for if a man knows himself what power have his enemies to belittle him? The child was obviously no ordinary child but the quietness of his birth (it was not published in the stars) and the circumstances of his beginnings had deceived all into thinking that his given name was just another foolish mortal mistake to be scoffed at.

That day the one who the waters thought to consume as if he were nothing, disembarked his canoe and walked upon the waters. Greater-than the powers of the earth, sea, sky and the elementals he truly was. They presumed to make an end of his life but they only heralded its new beginning.

Know ye therefore that we the watchers who have witnessed these things herein give counsel that all be surnamed Greater-than who would do likewise in conquering the worlds before them. Let the wise understand.
